Clear Thinking for Complex Agriculture
I have spent most of my life somewhere between the barn, the field, and the meeting room. I am a farmer, swine nutritionist, consultant, writer, and podcast host, but those titles describe the work more easily than they explain the person.
The common thread is curiosity. I want to understand what is really happening, why people make the decisions they do, and how science, experience, economics, and human nature collide in the real world.
The Work
My professional career began with pigs and has stayed close to them. I studied Animal Science and Animal Agribusiness at Purdue University, then earned my M.S. and Ph.D. at Kansas State University through research focused on practical questions in swine production.
Since then, I have spent nearly three decades working across animal nutrition, feed, product development, technical support, research, animal health, and commercial agriculture. The most useful work has usually happened where science meets a feed mill, a barn, a balance sheet, and the people responsible for making the plan work.
Today, I work independently with producers, feed teams, and agricultural organizations on swine nutrition, feed strategy, product development, and implementation. I also speak to groups about agriculture, leadership, careers, and making difficult decisions when the answers are not obvious.
The Farm
Kim and I began farming together when we married in 1998. After returning to Northeast Indiana in 2007, we built J&K Smith Family Farms, growing corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay near Grabill.
The farm is not a backdrop for my professional work or writing. It is work I do, and it keeps me close to the uncertainty, responsibility, relationships, and decisions that come with having a crop and money on the line. It shapes how I think about risk, stewardship, and whether a good idea still works when it reaches the field.
The Patio
Patio Pondering began in September 2024 with coffee, a keyboard, and a career change I did not see coming. I started writing to work through what I was seeing and thinking. The podcast followed because some questions are better explored across a table than alone on a page.
The work is not meant to polish people into marketing stories. I want to leave enough of the real person intact that someone listening or reading can recognize something of themselves.
The Patio is a place to talk, think, commiserate, plan, and sometimes admit that our first answer was wrong. That is Clear Thinking for Complex Agriculture as I understand it.
Service and Community
I have also spent much of my life serving young people and my community through 4-H, Scouting, and local civic work. Those roles have put me in classrooms, meeting rooms, township conversations, and on the trail at Philmont.
I do not see service as a separate résumé category. It is another place where preparation, responsibility, leadership, and care for other people become real.
